Cheeta The Chimp Wants A Star

Cheeta the chimp is looking to break the monkey barrier in the Hollywood Walk of Fame. That’s right. The chimp from the Tarzan films and the 1967 Dr. Doolittle movie is making his seventh attempt to earn a star on the famous sidewalk. If successful, Cheeta would be the first monkey to be honored on the walk, but not the first animal. Lassie, Rin Tin Tin and Kermit the Frog are a few of the real life and fictional non-humans who already have a star.

If you want to help, Cheeta’s handlers are mounting a campaign with an online petition to get the chimp a star in 2009. The petition promotes Cheeta as “one of the international, animal mega-stars of all time.” It also claims his induction would “focus attention on his fellow primates in the wilds of Africa who are now facing extinction.”

The Walk of Fame Committee will make their 2009 selections for the sidewalk later this month. Whether of not Cheeta’s bid is successful he already holds a place of distinction not only in the entertainment world, but also in the record books. The 76 year old chimp is still recognized by the Guinness World Records as the oldest living, non-human primate.
