Say What You Want, Will Smith Big Draw

The July 4th box office results are in. You can say what you want about Will Smith’s latest flick, but reality is, he’s still a huge draw. Many critics, and many people, tanked his latest movie Hancock. While I must admit it’s not one of his strongest movies, and it also flies in the face of the slick-superhero-flicks of late, Hancock is another hit for Smith. He’s now celebrating the success of the movie as it came in at number one at the box office over the weekend pulling in $66 million. All in all, for the total July 4th weekend holiday, counting the Tuesday night early showing, Hancock rang up $107 million dollars.

As mentioned above, and also as I wrote about in my Hancock review, this is not a really strong movie. But, it’s Will Smith, and he’s very smart when it comes to picking and choosing roles. Hancock marks his fifth movie to premiere as the top movie over the 4th of July holiday. It joins the ranks of Men in Black, Men in Black II, Independence Day and Wild, Wild West. This is also Will Smith’s eighth film in a row to open in the number one spot. That makes him the most bankable star currently working in Hollywood.

So what does this say about the critics and the complainers about the movie? Possibly that they’re over-thinking the whole flick. When you put Will Smith at the top of your list for credits as a filmmaker, it looks like you’re heading for the number one box office spot.

Enjoy the show!
