Movie Monday: The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants
The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 is set to open on August 6. We have a screening for the new Warner Bros. movie coming up this Thursday, July 31. With that in mind, we decided it might be a good idea to watch the first one which was released in 2005.
The first Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants was released in June of 2005. The June 1 opening weekend only pulled in approximately $10 million dollars. I know, you’re saying only $10 million? But, when it comes to weekend opening box office numbers, those are not big numbers at all. However, even after saying that, the first installment of the Sisterhood did make money, which is often a rarity in the world of movies. With a production budget of $25 million dollars, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants pulled in a total domestic gross of slightly more than $39 million dollars.
In other words, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, was a money-maker.
Based on Anne Brashares’s young-adult novel, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants tells the story of four best friends, coming of age and discovering what’s really important in life. After buying a pair of pants that fit each of them, despite the fact that they’re different sizes, they decide to share the pants. This has special meaning as they’re separated through the summer. What initially looks like bad luck while sharing the pants, actually points toward some great life lessons each girl will discover along the way.
For me, this movie starts a little on the slow side. At first I also found it somewhat confusing as the filmmakers follow four distinct plot lines as each girl deals with their own issues, in different parts of the world. To be honest, I almost gave up on the movie. Especially since I knew it clocked in at almost 2 hours. I just couldn’t imagine sitting through 2 hours of this young-chick-flick and hope to get anything out of it. Of course at the same time, I was wondering how I would enjoy the sequel to this movie if I couldn’t even make it through the first installment of Traveling Pants.
Well, I did hang with it, and I’m glad I did. In the end The Sisterhood of The Traveling Pants is a real-to-life coming of age movie, not only for girls, but also for guys. Too often young people think the world revolves around them. But, as they get older, they discover such is not the case. There are many lessons in this movie, and in particular, there are four important lessons as each character discovers what’s important in their own lives. I’m glad I stuck it out for the first one, and now I’m looking forward to The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 screening later this week.
Enjoy the show!
