An American Carol
MINUS 2 Lloyds! – Not Family-Friendly
PG-13 for rude and irreverent content, and for language and brief drug material.
First off, let me be clear here, I’m putting aside all of my political leanings as I review this movie.
I really wanted to like this movie. But in the end, I have to say An American Carol would have been better left on the editing room floor. The commercials for the movie, and many conservatives, are applauding those involved in this rant against the left saying they may never work in Hollywood again. Reality is this, working in Hollywood again will have nothing to do with the political stripe of those involved in this flick. They may never work again because An American Carol is simply a bad movie. There’s an old saying that goes like this — You’re only as good as the last thing people see you in. — That being the case, anyone who sees this movie will remember all those involved as taking part in a bomb.
An American Carol is described as a movie celebrating the American spirit. It’s also described as an outrageous and totally irreverent comedy.
About the only thing right in that description is the reference to being irreverent. Writer/director David Zucker, who also brought us such forgettable flicks as Airplane!, The Naked Gun, and Scary Movie 3 and 4, has proven once again why he’s a non-impressive and non-influence on the Hollywood crowd. His movies fall flat and are nothing more than a series poorly written and poorly produced 10 minute sketches tossed together in what’s supposed to be called a movie. These sketches are better left on all-night TV where only insomniacs see them.
For the conservatives, whom this movie is supposedly aimed at, this is nothing more than an insult to ones intelligence. It looks like a collection of really bad Saturday Night Live sketches. The only difference, instead of coming from the looney left, this is from the raging right point of view. Why does it have that sketch feel? Maybe that’s the only type of humor Kevin P. Farley, the brother of the late Chris Farley from Saturday Night Live, can do. As some conservatives said on the way out of the movie…
“An American Carol is crass, rude and crude.”
As mentioned earlier, and as I wrote about in an earlier post entitled An American Carol Hits A Sour Note, all involved with An American Carol should be embarrassed. An American Carol needs to fall into the same annuls as the Michael Moore trash. At least Moore has figured out no one wants to buy his movies. Now he gives them away for free on the Internet. I’ve often said you can’t always judge, or review, a movie from it’s trailer. I wish the same could be said about the so-called “conservative-must-see-movie” An American Carol. This flick looked disappointing on the trailers, and it proves to be disappointing in the movie theater too. About the only good thing about this movie is that if you skip the credits, it clocks in at barely more than an hour. That means your popcorn won’t really have time to get cold before the movie finishes.
An American Carol is best left un-viewed and it is NOT family-friendly. The movie firmly falls into the waste-of-time category. It’s lame, sophomoric, an insult to ones intelligence and simply a poorly done flick. As I said above, the entire movie should have been left on the editing room floor.
Avoid the show!
