Entertainment News: Warner Bros. & WKRP

We Are Marshall & WKRP Back On The Air!

There’s always something going on in the wonderful world of entertainment news. Some of the news is rather easy to find. Other little news tidbits tend to slide under the radar. Once again, it’s time to go through some of stories that have been piling up on my desk in the Frame by Frame file. It’s easy to grab the big headline stories, but I like to collect some of the lesser known stories. While they don’t get as much press, it certainly does not mean the stories should be ignored. So, in this post, just like one from a few weeks ago, I’ll look at some Entertainment News: Odds and Ends.

I have to items today…

  • Warner Brothers Wins We Are Marshall Suit
  • Cincinnati TV Station Changes Call Letters

We Are Marshall

A federal judge in Los Angeles has ruled the 2006 Warner Brothers movie We Are Marshall did not steal from a 2000 Emmy-winning documentary called Ashes to Glory: The Tragedy and Triumph of Marshall Football. Both movies focus on the true story of a plane crash that killed more than three dozen members of the Marshall University football team in 1970.

The producers of the documentary filed a $40 million copyright infringement suit which claimed Warner Brothers knowingly stole material from Ashes to Glory after they couldn’t reach an agreement with the studio to acquire the rights to their documentary. The judge denied the infringement claim saying the events before and after the crash “are all matters of public record which cannot be copyrighted.”

We Are Marshall, which starred Matthew McConaughey and Matthew Fox, pulled in more than $43 million at the box office.

Cincinnati TV Station Changes Call Letters To WKRP

Have you ever wondered what became of WKRP in Cincinnati? Aside from weekend reruns, it’s now a TV station! The small Cincinnati station WBQC-TV has officially changed its call letters to WKRP. Of course it’s an obvious nod to the 1978-1982 sitcom WKRP in Cincinnati. The station says it made the switch to promote its new digital TV signal. Of course the publicity of the famous TV show which brought us memorable lines like — “As God is my witness…I thought turkeys could fly”…isn’t hurting the station either.

There’s no word yet on whether or not the TV station hired a new receptionist to go along with the name change…

The WKRP TV show, which was actually about a radio station, starred Loni Anderson, Howard Hesseman and the late Gordon Jump.

Enjoy the show!
