011909: Weekend Box Office

Paul Blart: Mall Cop Debuts At Number 1 Box Office Spot

Kevin James and his Security Officer flick Paul Blart: Mall Cop grabbed the number one spot at the top of the weekend box office results! The cautiously family-friendly flick made an estimated $33.8 million dollars. That was enough to push Clint Eastwood’s Gran Torino back to the number two spot with a box office take of $22.2 million dollars.

The horror remake My Bloody Valentine 3D and the Notorious B.I.G. biopic Notorious both made slightly more than $21 million dollars, opening in third and fourth place respectively. However, they could switch spots once the final box office tallies are released. Hotel For Dogs premiered in fifth place with $17.7 million dollars.

Few Surprises In The Top 10

A quick scan of the weekend top 10 really has few surprises, at least for me. While Hotel For Dogs is a stronger movie than Paul Blart: Mall Cop, the Kevin James movie simply has more star-power-pull. When you stack James up against Emma Roberts and Don Cheadle, apparently more people are interested in James. Also, Hotel For Dogs appeals to a younger audience.

Here are the top 10 movies from Friday through Sunday, with estimated ticket sales:

  1. Paul Blart: Mall Cop – $33.3 million
  2. Gran Torino – $22.2 million
  3. My Bloody Valentine 3D – $21.9 million
  4. Notorious – $21.5 million
  5. Hotel for Dogs – $17.7 million
  6. Bride Wars – $11.75 million
  7. The Unborn – $9.8 million
  8. Defiance – $9.2 million
  9. Marley & Me – $6.3 million
  10. Slumdog Millionaire – $5.9 million
