012609: Weekend Box Office

Paul Blart Handcuffs #1 Box Office Spot Again

Paul Blart: Mall Cop took the number one spot at the box office for the second weekend in a row. The Kevin James comedy pulled in another $21.5 million.

Of course this begs the question – Why!?

This really isn’t a strong movie. If anything it’s three half hour sitcom episodes strung together barely barely making a run time of an hour and a half. Just why has Mall Cop stuck at number one again? It’s probably because out of the possible flicks on the big screen making up the top 10, five are Rated R, one is three hours long and another has been in theaters for three weeks. As a result, when push comes to shove, Kevin James is the best bet out there for dropping your hard earned money for a movie ticket and some popcorn.

How New Releases Did

Underworld: Rise of the Lycans, the third installment in the Underworld series, debuted in second place earning $20.7 million. The weekend’s only other new release, Inkheart may disappear from theaters rather quickly. The Brendan Fraser fantasy flick earned just a seventh place debut with $7.7 million.

In the force-fed category list of movies Hollywood wants to make smash hits, they didn’t fair very well either. The combination of expanding into wider release and receiving 10 Oscar nominations put Slumdog Millionaire into a fifth place showing with $10.6 million. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, which picked up 13 Oscar nods, barely made it to the number 9 spot with just $6 million.
