Footloose A Go Again

The Remakes Continue

Someone once said – There’s nothing new under the sun. – If you scan the Hollywood movie line up these days, the truth of that phrase certainly rings true. We find ourselves in a silver-screened-sea of franchise relaunches and movie remakes. Some are good, some are bad, and some should have just been left alone.

I’m really not sure what to think of the remake of the 1984 flick Footloose which starred Kevin Bacon as the young Ren McCormack. As a quick refresher on the movie – McCormack is a city boy who suddenly finds himself in a small town where rock music and dancing have been banned.

Of course Ren takes it upon himself to change that. In so doing, he turns the town upside down with rock and roll and dancing!

Zac Efron Out – Crawford In

A few months ago the Footloose remake was put on hold as Zac Efron ejected from the Ren McCormack role saying he wanted to pursue other genres. Personally, I think that was a very smart move for Efron. While he gets off to a shaky start in his latest movie 17 Again, in the end, the flick is a good transition movie for him. When Efron said no to the roll, suddenly the production of the remake went into a holding pattern.

But now, the Footloose remake has a replacement for Zac Efron.

Gossip Girl star Chace Crawford has been cast as Ren McCormack, the role made famous by Kevin Bacon in the 1984 original. The hiring of Crawford comes as no surprise, since it’s been rumored for weeks. He’s taking over the role from Efron who dropped out of the project in March because he didn’t want to star in another musical following his success in the High School Musical films.

As the cast for the Footloose flick continues to take shape, Crawford could soon have more company. Miley Cyrus is being considered for the top female role. Meanwhile, Hayden Panettiere, Amanda Bynes and country singer/Dancing with the Stars pro Julianne Hough reportedly have auditioned for the film too.
