052509: Weekend Box Office

A Sub-Par Sequel Tops Four Day Box Office

The Night at the Museum sequel topped the box office over the holiday weekend. Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian, starring Ben Stiller pulled in an estimated $70 million from Friday through Monday. By comparison, the original film earned $30.4 million during its three-day opening weekend in 2006. The test will be to see if this sub-par-sequel has the staying power the first one did. I’m predicting it will not have the same staying power as the first one. While it does have some laugh-out-loud moments, for the most part, Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian should have been left in the undone sequel pile.

Meanwhile, Terminator Salvation pulled in $53.8 million from Friday through Monday, placing it in the second spot for the weekend box office. The Terminator relaunch made a total of $67.2 million since opening last Thursday. Terminator Salvation director McG said he was interested in working with the fourth film in the series because “People are still fascinated with the material. What was science fiction in the early 1980’s, is real today with artificial intelligence in cell phones and BlackBerrys.”

Last Weeks #1 Flick Falls To #4

Star Trek continues to do well with its reboot movie too. The revamped, and much younger Enterprise crew warped to the number three spot over the weekend beaming in $29.4 million in ticket sales. Last week’s box office champ, Angels & Demons dropped to fourth place with $27.7 million. The latest Wayans Brothers spoof, Dance Flick, premiered in fifth place with $13.1 million.
