Movies We Don’t Need To See

Do We Really Need These Movie Remakes?

Hollywood Gone Mad!

Is there no end in sight of the remakes Hollywood thinks we all want to see? A few weeks ago I wrote that this summer may be remembered as the Summer of Relaunches and Sequels. Then, just when you thought it might be safe to enter the movie theater again for something new and original, news starts coming out of Hollywood about possible remakes!

What’s on the list?

  • The A-Team
  • Saturday Night Fever
  • Full House

Only one is a real movie. The other two fall into the category of small screen shows best left in TVLand reruns!

Nothing New Under The Sun

1) Will Liam Neeson Lead “The A-Team”?
It’s being reported that Liam Neeson is in negotiations to star in a movie version of the 1980’s TV series The A-Team. Neeson would play Colonel John “Hannibal” Smith, the character made famous by the late George Peppard.

Others being considered for the possible small screen to big screen flick – Bradley Cooper, who’s currently starring in The Hangover is apparently in talks to fill the role of Lt. Templeton “Face” Peck. Dirk Benedict played “Face” in the TV series. The roles of Captain “Howling Mad” Murdock, played by Dwight Schultz and Sgt. B.A. Baracus, which made Mr. T a star, have not yet been filled.

Producers say The A-Team movie will maintain the original series premise about four vets wrongly convicted of armed robbery. They escape the law, and become mercenaries who help the innocent. But, don’t look for the campy fun nature of the TV show to appear in the big screen version. The movie is said to have a more serious tone.

2) A Remake of Saturday Night Fever?
Britain’s Sun newspaper is reporting that American Idol judge Simon Cowell is in negotiations to secure the rights to a remake of the 1977 film Saturday Night Fever. According to reports, Cowell wants High School Musical star Zac Efron to fill the white suit made famous by John Travolta!

Apparently Cowell has been negotiating with veteran film producer Robert Stigwood who owns the rights to the screenplay. But, Stigwood is looking for assurances that the original won’t be “completely butchered” before any deal is made. Rumor has it hip-hop producer Timbaland is being considered as a possible choice to re-work the Bee Gees soundtrack for the flick.

All I can say is, if Zac Efron is smart, he will run from the white suit! And, for those of us who survived the first disco-go-round, we should pray now this will not come to pass!

Last, but certainly not least…

3) Full House…The Movie?
Now that ER has ended its run, it appears that John Stamos how too much time on his hands. As a result, he’s sitting around thinking of what to do next. What is he coming up with? He’s working on a movie idea based on his earlier TV series, Full House.

Say it isn’t so!

Stamos, who played Jesse Katsopolis, says the Full House movie would probably be based on the early seasons of the series. He also said it would not star any of the original cast members. He envisions James Franco as Jesse and Steve Carell playing Bob Saget’s character as Danny Tanner. As for the role of Joey Gladstone, Stamos said he would cast Tracy Morgan as the character originally played by Dave Coulier.

As Stamos talked about a possible Full House movie, he also said he stays in close contact with all his former Full House co-stars. He said he even stays in contact with the Olsen twins. But, Stamos does not see a reunion “happening anytime soon.”
