Robots Transform #1 Box Office Spot

The Transformers sequel could be the biggest movie of the year. Not only did it grab the number one spot for the weekend box office, it also broke records for a Wednesday debut! Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, starring Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox grabbed an estimated $112 million over the weekend. The robotic-action-flick has banked approximately $201.2 million since it opened last Wednesday.

The previous box office champ, The Proposal, fell to second place with $18.5 million. The only other new release over the weekend, the Cameron Diaz drama My Sister’s Keeper, premiered in fifth place with $12 million.

Breaking Records

Before getting to the top ten list, it’s worth noting the latest Transformers flick broke a number of records over the weekend. First off, the opening weekend numbers for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, surpassed those of the 2007 original. When filmmakers re-launched the franchise, the first Transformers flick earned $70.5 million in its debut weekend. The new movie also becomes the biggest opening weekend for a movie this year, topping the $85.1 million made by X-Men Origins: Wolverine earlier this year. In addition, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen pulled in $14.4 million in IMAX theaters, setting a new record for a five-day opening.

At this rate, predictions put the sequel on track at becoming the highest-grossing movie of the year. That distinction is currently held by the animated movie Up, which as earned an estimated $250.2 million to date.
