Midnight Showings of Potter Flick!
The Countdown Is On!
Some fans will get in line early as Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince hits theaters at midnight tonight. The official release date for the latest in the Potter franchise is July 15. Since Wednesday officially begins at midnight, some big screens will get a jump start on what many are hoping will be another box office windfall.
Of course the early showing of Harry Potter will help add to the series’ potential record breaking box office tally. According to Variety, the Harry Potter movies could overtake the James Bond film franchise as the highest-grossing movie franchise of all time.
But, is this Harry Potter all that it’s hyped to be?
A Mini-Review
By Wednesday night, July 15, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince will be on over 4,250 screens. Once again we find Harry Potter and his friends caught in the midst of a supernatural fight. This time around Voldemort is tightening his grip on both the Muggle and wizarding worlds. Just as usual, much of his focus is on those inside the castle walls of Hogwarts. Harry senses the danger inside Hogwarts, by Dumbledore is more intent upon preparing him for a final battle he knows is fast approaching. Together they work to find the key to unlock Voldemort’s defenses.
In the midst of the overall plan, Dumbledore also recruits his old friend and colleague, the well-connected and unsuspecting Professor Horace Slughorn. Dumbledore believes the old Professor has crucial information which will ultimately help them defeat Voldemort.
Fluff and stuff!
My full review will come out tomorrow, but for now, lets just say Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is weak. Not only is it weak, but it’s full of fluff and stuff.
At first I wanted to say it was disjointed. But, as I thought about it, for the most part, the storyline does hold solid throughout the flick. But, what makes the 2 and half hour movie almost unbearable is the fact that the filmmakers seemed to have tarted up the movie. It’s like they’re knee-jerk reacting to the criticism of earlier movies as being too dark. Instead of the expected darkness and evil lurking around every corner, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince attempts to be a comedy at times!
That being said, Daniel Radcliffe, who of course plays the title character, seems bored and on cruise control throughout the movie. Even though Radcliffe says Harry Potter never got boring for him, he also says he’s ready to “move onto other projects.” Radcliffe, who’s now 19, debuted as Harry Potter in 2000, at the age of 10. He, along with others involved in the Potter franchise, all seem bored and put in what appears to be half-hearted performances.
Cautiously enjoy the show!
