Big opening day for Harry Potter

The new Harry Potter film looks to be on its way to becoming the highest-grossing movie of the year. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince earned $58.4 million in its Wednesday debut. That includes a record $22.2 million in midnight screenings. By comparison, the previous film in the series, 2007’s Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, raised $44 million in its first day of release. Worldwide, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince made a total of $104 million on Wednesday.

As for new movies to hit the big screen this week – Harry Potter is the only new flick in wide release this weekend. One other movie opens in a limited release status, while a third flick goes into sneak peak status.
