If you’re looking for family-friendly, it’s hard to find with the current movie choices. The numbers are in for the weekend and the top four spots in the box office are all R-rated flicks! The Final Destination made the trip to number one over the weekend. The fourth film in the horror series debuted with an estimated $28.3 million. Last weekend’s top film, Inglourious Basterds, came in second with $20 million.

Meanwhile, Rob Zombie’s horror sequel Halloween II grabbed the third spot with $17.4 million. The third new movie for the weekend, Ang Lee’s Taking Woodstock did not have the original festivals pull as it premiered in ninth place making slightly less than $4 million.

The End Of Summer

Labor Day isn’t until next week, but Paul Dergarabedian, a box office analyst, considers today to be the end of the summer movie season because the holiday landed on the first of September last year. As a result, that puts Hollywood earning estimates for the summer of 2009 at $4.26 billion. If you’re keeping track, that is better than last year’s record total. But, don’t be misled by the higher numbers. Analysts attribute the record ticket sales to higher ticket prices. Especially in light of the fact that attendance during the summer of 2009 was down 2.2 percent from last summer.
