Roman Polanski Arrested In Switzerland
Director Roman Polanski is facing the possibility of being extradited to the United States after he was arrested at an airport in Switzerland. The arrest comes more than 30 years after he fled the States following a guilty plea to having sex with a 13 year old girl. The Oscar-winning filmmaker traveled to Switzerland to accept a lifetime achievement award at the Zurich Film Festival.
The 76 year old Polanski fled the United States to France in 1978 in an attempt to avoid sentencing and has made his home there since then. The U.S. has 60 days to file a formal request to have the director extradited.
Will He Stand Trial For The Charges
Roman Polanski is expected to remain in Zurich until the extradition proceedings play out. According to court documents, prosecutors in Los Angeles arranged Polanski’s arrest through the Justice Department after learning the director was traveling to Switzerland.
The Zurich Film Festival started over the weekend and it still intended to move forward with the scheduled retrospective of Polanski’s work. His directing credits include Chinatown, Rosemary’s Baby and The Pianist which won him an Oscar.
Over the past year Polanski sought to have the case against him dismissed. He claimed a 2008 documentary about him – Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired – revealed misconduct between prosecutors and the Judge in the case. A Los Angeles Judge denied the request, in part, because Polanski failed to appear in court to pursue his claim further.
