Polanski Says He Will Not Go Easily
As Roman Polanski sits in a Switzerland jail, the United States will not have an easy time winning the request to have him extradited.
The 76 year old filmmaker says he will fight the attempt to have him extradited. Polanski’s lawyer says his client was “shocked” and “dumbfounded” by his arrest in Switzerland over the weekend. But, even though he’s shocked Polanski also said he’s in a “fighting mood and is very determined to defend himself.” His lawyer also said Polanski’s legal team is arguing that the United States’ request is illegal.
Los Angeles authorities have labeled the film director a fugitive for fleeing the U.S. for France in 1978. According to court documents, he fled the country while awaiting sentencing for having sex with a 13 year old girl. The United States is feeling some heat from French and Polish officials who are calling for Polanski to be released from a Swiss prison on bail. The famed-director, who has dual French-Polish citizenship, has spent a considerable amount of time at a Swiss resort this year.
