Jackson’s This Is It Grabs Big Global Box Office Numbers

Originally planned for just a two week run, SONY decided to extend the run for Michael Jackson’s This Is It movie. It’s now slated to stay on the big screen until Thanksgiving Weekend. However, I do wonder if it will have the staying power to remain in the top 10 box office numbers for that long. While it’s an interesting look at Michael Jackson as he prepared for his 2009 London concert series, such movies usually don’t have staying power.

When it originally opened there was absolutely nothing else worth seeing on the big screen. But, such is not the case now. The big screen is become quite active as we head toward the Thanksgiving and Christmas season.

While This Is It isn’t doing really strong in the domestic box office market, it certainly is strong on the global box office market!

This Is It Big On Global Box Office Market

As already mentioned, Michael Jackson’s This Is It is slowing on the domestic box office, but it’s not slowing on the global box office market. Sony Pictures announced yesterday, November 13, 2009, that the concert film has earned over $200 million worldwide, including $61 million in the United States. That means it’s closing in on the U.S. record for highest-grossing music documentary. Currently Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert movie currently holds that distinction with $65.3 million dollars.

It will be interesting to see just how long This Is It keeps pulling in box office cash.
