2012 Dominates!

The weekend debut of 2012 rumbled its way to the top of the box office. The latest John Cusack flick picked up an estimated $65 million which was more than enough to put the new disaster movie firmly at the top of the standings.

As a matter of fact, 2012 made more money than the rest of the films in the top ten, combined!

But, even more impressive than that little tidbit of information, 2012 pulled in a whopping $225 million worldwide! Sony Pictures reports it’s the highest total ever for an original movie not based on a franchise or best-selling novel.

The previous box office champ, Disney’s A Christmas Carol, fell to second place while the comedy Pirate Radio sank below the top 10 in its first weekend of release collecting just $2.9 million. But then again, it only opened on 800 screens.

The Box Office Top 10 Estimates

  1. 2012 – $65 million
  2. Disney’s A Christmas Carol – $22.3 million
  3. The Men Who Stare At Goats – $6.2 million
  4. Precious: Based on the Novel “Push” by Sapphire – $6.1 million
  5. Michael Jackson’s This Is It – $5.1 million
  6. The Fourth Kind – $4.7 million
  7. Couples Retreat – $4.3 million
  8. Paranormal Activity – $4.2 million
  9. Law Abiding Citizen – $3.9 million
  10. The Box – $3.2 million

Also of box office note – The $5.1 million picked up by Michael Jackson’s This Is It boosts its domestic total to $67.2 million which means it’s now the highest-grossing music documentary in U.S. box office history. The previous record of $65.3 million was held by last year’s Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert.

One other quick note, the horror flick Paranormal Activity, which reportedly had a budget of just $15,000, surpassed the $100 million mark.
