2009 Box Office Record Year

2009 Box Office Record Year

A Record Box Office Year!

lloyd-director

Throughout the year it seemed many people were concerned Hollywood was not making money at the box office. Studios cut back production and even held auction sales selling off anything that was no longer in use! Numbers were down, numbers were up, no one went to movies, everyone went to movies. In the end, it’s all a numbers game and no one really knows how the year will turn out until the end of the year!

It now looks like it’s been a banner year for the movie box office. Of course part of that has to do with the fact that it costs more to go to the movies these days. While the actual body count for moviegoers is down, the dollar amount is up.

But, nevertheless, when the numbers are tallied, it’s looking like a record year.

Transformers Leading The Way So Far

The highest-grossing movie for 2009, so far, is Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. Next on the list is Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and coming in third, so far on the year, is the animated flick Up. However, there are also a couple potential blockbusters on the horizon yet for this month before the year closes out. James Cameron’s big-budget sci-fi flick Avatar and the Robert Downey Jr. Sherlock Holmes movies are both expected to do extremely well. I would also be remiss if I didn’t make mention of the upcoming kids movie, Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel which is set for release just before Christmas as well.

But, even before the upcoming expected blockbusters come out, Hollywood has still set a new record already for box office revenue for this year. According to box office analyst Paul Dergarabedian, the film industry has surpassed the $9.68 billion dollars in revenue it earned during the previous record-setting year of 2007. Dergarabedian believes the 2009 total will actually reach approximately $10.6 billion by years end.
