Animation Tops The Box Office
After bumping off a vampire for the number one spot last week, the based on Michael Oher movie The Blind Side slid to the number two spot this weekend. Sandra Bullock just couldn’t hold off a princess smooching with a frog. Disney’s The Princess and the Frog reached the top spot for its first weekend in wide release, earning an estimated $25 million. The movie, which is a new twist on the Brothers Grimm tale The Frog Prince, also features Disney’s first African-American princess.
Clint Eastwood’s drama Invictus debuted at number three while the limited release Peter Jackson directed flick The Lovely Bones made $116,000 in just three theaters.
Box Office Top Ten with Estimates
- The Princess and the Frog – $25 million
- The Blind Side – $15.5 million
- Invictus – $9.1 million
- The Twilight Saga: New Moon – $8 million
- Disney’s A Christmas Carol – $6.9 million
- Brothers – $5 million
- 2012 – $4.4 million
- Old Dogs – $4.39 million
- Armored – $3.5 million
- Ninja Assassin – $2.7 million
It’s worth noting that Disney now has two animated flicks in the top 10 box office list. One is family-friendly while the other one, not so much. I was surprised Invictus didn’t do better. But, I am happy to see The Blind Side is still doing well. Of course when it comes to screen count numbers, The Blind Side is on more screens than Invictus.
I am not surprised that The Twilight Saga continues its fall down the top 10 list. But, I am surprised at the staying power of 2012.
Enjoy the show!
