CGI Tops Weekend Box Office
The big budget sci flick Avatar premiered in first place over the weekend picking up an estimated $73 million despite the massive snowstorm on the East Coast that kept many people at home. Avatar, which cost an estimated $400 million to make and market, set a new record for a film opening in 3D, surpassing the $68.1 million earned earlier this year by the animated story Up. Avatar also grossed over $159 million outside the United States.
The previous box office champ, Disney’s The Princess and the Frog slipped to the number two spot. Did You Hear About The Morgans?, the new flick starring Sarah Jessica Parker and Hugh Grant, debuted in fourth place.
