Dear John Ends Avatar #1 Run
In a very surprising weekend, Dear John ended Avatar’s strangle hold on the number one box office spot. The love story opened at number one pulling in an estimated $32.4 million. It’s also a new record total for a Super Bowl weekend passing the $31.1 million earned by the 2008 movie Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert. The John Travolta thriller From Paris With Love finished in third place, but it only managed to pull in slightly more than $8 million.

The James Cameron sci-fi flick Avatar held the number one spot for seven weeks in a row. This marks the end of the longest reign as box office champ by a film since Cameron’s Titanic, which was number one for 15 straight weeks over a decade ago.
