Burton & Depp Grab A New Record

Alice in Wonderland came out of the gate for its debut weekend in a very big way. Tim Burton and Johnny Depp’s 3D update and upgrade to the classic story pulled in an estimated total of $116.3 million. For the record, that’s also a record for a 3D flick, surpassing the sci-fli flick Avatar. As a side note, it was not a good weekend for James Cameron as he even lost out to his ex-wife for Best Picture honors at the Oscars. Aside from a record breaking haul in 3D format, Alice in Wonderland also set a new opening record for a non-sequel and for the highest-grossing IMAX premiere.

The only other new movie for the weekend grabbed the number two spot for the weekend box office. While it was a very distant second, Brooklyn’s Finest pulled in $13.5 million. Shutter Island fell to the third spot.
