The Tourist

PG-13 for violence and brief strong language.
Genre: Action, drama, thriller
Running Time: 1 hour 43 minutes

An American tourist by the name of Frank meets a mysterious and beautiful woman who pulls him into a dangerous world of intrigue and espionage while traveling through Europe. Of course when Frank first met Elise on the train, he thought it was just a chance encounter. Little did he realize, it was all part of a bigger plan. A plan that soon has him dodging bullets through both the historic streets of Paris and the winding canals of Venice.

But then things get even more complicated when the faster Frank and Elise run, the more intense their romance grows!

A Laid-Back Attention Grabber

The genre description says The Tourist is an action, drama, thriller. While it is a drama and does contain some action, this is more of a laid-back attention grabber than a sit on the edge of your seat attention grabber. That’s not to say The Tourist is a bad movie. As a matter of fact, it’s far from it and I do hope Johnny Depp wins the award he’s been nominated for in relation to his performance. Depp does not let down and once again this is a great example of the versatility of this incredible actor. Johnny Depp plays the American tourist Frank very well. But, not only does he play his character well, he and Angelina Jolie, who plays Elise, work very well together too.

The movie opens with scenes showing that Jolie’s character, Elise, is in some kind of trouble. It becomes obvious rather quickly that she’s being followed. Not only is she being followed, police have been watching her for two years in the hopes that she will contact her lover who embezzled over $2 billion. She then receives a mysterious note summoning her to meet her lover but first she must through the police off the trail. That’s when she randomly sits next to Frank, an American tourist on a train going to Venice.

Unexpected Twist and Turns

As movie reviewers we obviously see a lot of movies. It takes a lot for a movie to really jump out at us, especially in the area of story and plot line. For the most part the old saying – “There’s nothing new under the sun” – is true. Many times we come out of movies with the feeling that we’ve seen it before. Sometimes we can even pinpoint the movie that it looks like.

But, such is not the case with The Tourist!

This is one of those movies that’s hard to write a review for without giving any spoilers. So suffice it to say, The Tourist is a great movie worth seeing. It falls somewhere in the category of intrigue with a Columbo like feeling. It’s like a who-done-it as you find yourself winding through a story with twists and turns about a woman involved with a tourist, while also trying to meet up with the man of her dreams who’s wanted by the law.

When all was said and done we left the theater saying….

Wow! Didn’t see that coming!

When a movie does that for us, it is definitely worth seeing.

Enjoy the show!
