No Surprise – Potter Breaks Box Office Records

The final Harry Potter flick pulled no punches and it is no surprise that it also cleaned up at the weekend box office breaking records along the way. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 set a record for the highest grossing debut ever earning an estimated $168.6 million, surpassing the $158.4 million The Dark Knight raised in 2008. However, once again, lets keep in mind that ticket prices were lower in 2008 than they are now. Also, unlike The Dark Knight, the Harry Potter film also benefited from higher-priced 3D screenings too. So once again we must remember this is more like comparing apples and oranges than anything else.

Aside from domestic box office numbers, the new Potter boy movie also made a record $307 million outside the United States since it started opening in international markets last Wednesday. Overall, the final movie in this franchise has pulled in $475 million.

In other movie news – Transformers: Dark of the Moon, which had been the box office winner for two weeks running, fell to second place while Disney’s Winnie the Pooh debuted in the number sixth spot.
