Captain America: The First Avenger

Meek, mild-mannered and small U.S. Army soldier Steve Rogers takes part in an experimental military program which infuses him with super-human powers. With his new-found strength Captain Rogers sets out to battle the evil Red Skull in this Marvel Comic Book superhero flick.

As Captain America – Rogers leads a group of faithful and fearless men into battle during Nazi war-time.

The Avengers Begin To Take Shape

In 2008 the first in the series of the Marvel Comic Book heroes appeared on the scene with Robert Downey Junior playing the famed hero Iron Man. At that point in time we also started seeing hints of the entire SHIELD superheroes being re-united as the Avengers on the big screen. A few years later Iron Man 2 was released and that movie ended with hints of a Thor movie. Now with the arrival of Captain America the pieces are in place for a combined Marvel superhero movie which is coming in May of next year.

I must admit I was disappointed with Thor. In my opinion it was nothing more than a throw-away movie with one purpose – introduce Thor as an Avenger.

As I lay in foundation for this review – I was very impressed with the first Iron Man movie. But found the second one lacking in the glamour area of the first one. The story line for the second Iron Man seemed sketchy at best and once again seemed to be nothing more than a vehicle to fill in some blanks for the formation of SHIELD and the upcoming Avengers movie.

With the arrival of Captain America: The First Avenger in the midst of all the other comic book heroes that are appearing on the scene this summer, I was a little hesitant concerning the quality of this flick. However, any doubts were quickly swept away within the first few minutes of this slightly more than two hour movie. Captain America leaps of the screen and honestly is the first movie to stack up in the area of Marvel quality with the first Iron Man movie. If the filmmakers were looking to re-launch the struggling Marvel comic book superhero genre, they did accomplished that goal quite well with Captain America.

The acting is superb with Chris Evans of Fantastic Four fame putting in a top notch performance as Steve Rogers, also known as Captain America. The supporting cast is all stand out and it’s nice to see Tommy Lee Jones on the big screen again too. All in all the chemistry of those working on the big screen in this flick works very well.

Over all we really enjoyed Captain America: The First Avenger. The plot and story line connects the dots for the upcoming Avenger movie. Even if you haven’t seen the earlier movies in this series, you will not be lost. Marvel and the movie industry would also do well to release a box set of the two Iron Man movies and the recently released on DVD Thor movie right now. As we left the movie theater Sandra said she had to go home and finally watch the Iron Man movies. (Which we did by the way).

As for our family-family rating – Yes, we are calling Captain America: The First Avenger family-friendly for the rating. Remember, this is a PG-13 rated movie though. Again, this is not for the really young. But, for the 13 and up crowd, there really isn’t anything here they haven’t seen before in the genre of action and war scenes.

Enjoy the show!
