080111: Weekend Box Office

It’s A Weekend Box Office Tie!

It doesn’t happen often, but the weekend box office estimates put two debut movies in a tie for the top spot. Cowboys & Aliens along with a movie about little blue people just three apples tall, The Smurfs, are both at the top of the box office, for now anyway. Official numbers will come out later today and we’ll see if the tie holds.

Last weekends number one movie, Captain America: The First Avenger, dropped to third place. The weekends other new release, Crazy, Stupid, Love debuted in fifth place. Meanwhile, even though the Potter kid passed the $1 billion mark in worldwide revenue, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 continues its free-fall down the box office list landing at the number four spot this week. Don’t be fooled by the numbers. While this eighth movie in the Potter franchise may be the top growing film for the series, that does not mean more people are seeing the flick. Actually, inflated ticket prices for 3D viewing has skyrocketed the box office dollar take.
